Beach Maintenance 

Public Works cleans up Town beaches in the spring and maintains them through the season. The water quality at the beaches is monitored by Grey-Bruce Public Health. In the event Public Health considers a beach bacteriologically unsafe a sign will be posted.

Sauble Beach is a Blue Flag Beach and home to the endangered species the Piping Plover. Special maintenance care is required to protect the Piping Plover during breeding season. The Friends of Sauble Beach are a group of volunteers dedicated to enhancing the beach.

The Oliphant Shoreline has several beaches including Sandy Bay and Lonely Island. The Friends of Oliphant Coastal Environments are a group of volunteers dedicated to preserving the Oliphant Coastline. In 2010 an Oliphant Shoreline Steering Committee has been formed by the Town to discuss issues facing the area. The committee consists of representatives from the campers, residents, kayakers, kiteboarders, and FOOCE. If you would like to be added to the contact list email Christine or call 519-534-1400 x133


Cemeteries

 Public Works takes care of the following cemeteries:

  • Red Bay Cemetery
  • Edgehill Cemetery, Colpoys Bay
  • Bayview Cemetery, Wiarton

 

We also perform:

  • Locate plots, and burial preparation
  • Maintain site plans and burial records
  • Sale of Vacant Plots for Internment

Road and Bridge Maintenance

Repair and maintain roads, bridges and culverts on local Town roads.

Winter Maintenance

Winter Maintenance Activities are performed from November 1 to March 31 of each year. The Town of South Bruce Peninsula completes its winter maintenance in accordance with the Minimum Maintenance Standards for Ontario Highways. Accordingly the Town of South Bruce Peninsula Roads are patrolled to document conditions and call out plows. If you would like to call attention to an issue on your road email us.

The Town of South Bruce Peninsula has a sidewalk clearing by-law. #90-2001 and #16-2008. In accordance with this by-law sidewalks are to be cleared by the owner or occupant of each property by 9AM.

Road Restrictions

As of April 15, 2010 Road Restrictions are no longer in effect for all Town of South Bruce Peninsula roads - 5 tonnes per axle. 


Special Projects


Water and Sanitary Sewers

Maintenance of the Water and Sanitary Sewers is completed under contract by the Ontario Clean Water Agency (OCWA).

The Town of South Bruce Peninsula currently has several Water systems:

  • Amabel-Sauble
  • Foreman
  • Huron-Woods
  • Oliphant
  • Wiarton

and one Sanitary Sewer/Wastewater Treatment Plant in Wiarton.

Two new by-laws to protect municipal water have been passed. One relates to fire hydrants, the 2nd requires water meters to be installed in new buildings, and substantial renovations.
